Postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious mental health condition that occurs in some women after childbirth. It is characterized by a rapid onset of psychotic symptoms, which may include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there), delusions (false beliefs), confusion, disorientation, and severe mood disturbances. Postpartum psychosis typically develops within the first two weeks after childbirth, but it can occur anytime within the first few months postpartum.
Counselling can play a supportive role in the treatment of postpartum psychosis. With prompt and appropriate treatment, most women with postpartum psychosis recover fully and can safely care for themselves and their baby. However, postpartum psychosis requires timely intervention to prevent potential harm to the mother, her infant, and others.
