Factitious Disorder

Factitious disorder is a mental health condition characterized by the deliberate fabrication, exaggeration, or induction of physical or psychological symptoms in oneself to assume the role of a patient. Individuals with factitious disorder may feign illness, self-harm, or manipulate medical tests or procedures to garner attention, sympathy, or care from medical professionals, family members, or others.

Psychological counselling can play a valuable role in helping individuals with factitious disorder address underlying psychological issues, gain insight into their behaviors, and develop healthier coping strategies.

Treatment for factitious disorder is challenging and often requires a multidisciplinary approach involving mental health professionals, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Psychotherapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), may help individuals explore underlying motivations, address maladaptive coping strategies, and develop healthier ways of managing emotions and seeking attention.
